“Diverscape” - Stockport’s Living Room
This project focuses on creating a cultural community space that brings people together through shared experiences, creativity and tradition. The concept was to design a place that evolves over time, shaped by the people who use it. Communal areas host meals, cultural showcases and collaborative events, while workshop spaces across multiple floors offer activities such as pottery, painting and textiles.
The items created in the workshops are displayed in the shared communal spaces, allowing the environment to continuously change and reflect the community’s diversity and creativity. Each object – whether a piece of furniture, a tile or a lamp – becomes part of a larger collective story. Nothing is fixed; the design grows through participation, workshops and the personal contributions of its users.
As part of the project, I designed and built a multifunctional table using leftover materials from the university workshop. Inspired by African patterns, I created bold, earthy designs that highlight cultural heritage, sustainability and upcycling.
I also designed a series of decorative tiles, each influenced by a different culture – including Moroccan, Sardinian, Cuban, Swedish, Portuguese and Chinese motifs. By combining them, I created a unified but multicultural surface that celebrates diversity through design.
In addition, I experimented with alternative materials by using crushed eggshells mixed with plaster to form a textured, sustainable tile. This process allowed me to explore how waste materials can be repurposed creatively and meaningfully.
Overall, the project is a reflection on how design can create belonging – through shared stories, handcrafted objects and spaces that grow with their community.
